i have been on the phone for over three hours with BT, i can send emails
using windows mail, but when the computer tries to conect to the server to
download my emails to the inbox the connection is lost with the following
error message:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail.btinternet.com',
Server: 'mail.btinternet.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

i am using AVG and have turned it off to no avail, i have also tried
disabling windows firewall, to no avail

i have googled the error code and tried many solutions with out success, i
have changed from a non ssl conection to a ssl connection, no help.
any suggestions?
i have googled the error code and tried many options f

Uninstall AVG and see if it works. If so, then you can try and reinstall
it and when doing so, do not install the email scanning component and then
see if it works. If not, then get something besides AVG. See point 3 here:

To make this Analytic, Debug or Classic event log easier to navigate and
manipulate, first save it in .evtx format by using the "Save Log File As"
action.
