How did you "cancel" Avast? My suggestion would be to remove Avast, using
the Windows "Add/Remove Programs" utility in the control panel, then
reinstall Avast. Pay close attention to the installation options offered;
when you have the choice, select "Custom Install", and then choose to not
install the email scanning component of Avast.
When you are done, you will have a memory resident "on access" virus
scanner, which is all the protection you need. The e-mail scanner will not
be installed.
