Cannot read blank DVD's after installing SP1a

Hi I have a PC here at work which has a bare XP
installation on it. I have installed an NEC-ND1100A DVD-
R/W drive. It works fine initially but after I install
SP1a it will no longer recognise blank DVD's. Has anyone
else come across this problem before and if so, what is
the solution??
