Cannot print remotely on shared printer

It used to work but I installed SP2 and may have made inadvertently some
other changes but I can't print remotely anymore from workstations attached
to local network to a shared printer at a XP Professional system. Remote
workstations use Win98 and Win95.
I can see the shared printer at the remote systems. Selection of "Open"
will yield the installation of the printer even so it is already installed
(make a copy).
When trying to print, I see in the spool at the remote system an entry but
no data accumulates. The spool at the host system (XP) will show at this
time no entry.
The printer driver at the remote system will report "Printer not ready
cannot communicate …." When I cancel the print at the remote system, the
spool at the host system will show an entry with status "spooling" for a few
seconds. Please tell me were to look. I have spent days on this and I am
about to become insane.

Something has become corrupted in the printer setup. I think this
calls for starting over:

1. Un-share and re-share the printer on XP Professional.

2. Un-install and re-install the printer as a network printer on Win98
and Win95.

I wish it were that easy; I did this multiple times but to no benefit.
