Go into Help and Support and look for the information on Compatibility Mode.
The older type games usually run quite well when you use it. There's also
detailed information on the TechNet site here:

New install of Unreal Tournament G.O.T.Y edition seems to have a problem
with DX9b. Takes forever to load up and then only the default
640x480. Used to work fine until I installed Call of Duty and Max Payne
2 along with the DX version that came with COD. When I try to change
resolution in UT, system freezes. Any thoughts? BTW, COD and Payne run fine.

Have you sought out updates for the game?

I had a big problem playing old dos games, actually it
was playing 16bit games. I even bought a shell program
to run 16bit games in WinXP because they wouldn't work,
even with the compatiblity wizard.

The ultimate culprit was WinXP had compressed some files
in the System32 folder that WinXP needed to run 16bit
games. I uncompressed all the files in the Windows
folder and have never had a problem with that since.
