Cannot play audio CD's after SP2

After installing XP-SP2, my DVD ROM drive will no longer
play audio CD's. Event viewer shows event id 9. Looking
that up only yields a suggestion to clean the CD. The
problem occurs on different CD's, using different player
apps. Also, data CD's are not a problem.

iTunes hangs up. It plays songs from the iTunes web site
just fine.

Creative Media Center says there is no CD in the drive.

Windows Media Player says the DVD ROM drive is "busy".

Windows Explorer tries to open a window, but the window
remains blank. If I try using Explorer with an audio CD in
the drive, I have to reboot the PC to be able to do almost
anything else.

I need help, I am out of ideas.
