Router: Dlink DI-624
Windows XP
Network adapter: Intel PRO/100 VE

I have had this system set up successfully for ages. Recently I had
some crashing problems and I replaced ram, since then I can't ping the
router through xp box (request timed out)

I have tried swapping cables and using different LAN ports. I thought
it was the router, but no, I am on the 'net right now through my win2k
laptop using the same router. So the router is OK. Since I am now
accessing the router through this laptop so I have checked that the IP
address of the router is 192.168.0.1 (I had a problem once where it
changed to 192.168.0.2 for some undocumented reason)

The router has dhcp enabled and I can see that it correctly detects
the two computers on network. It gets everything correct about the XP
box (192.168.0.100, & MAC) although it doesn't show it's name (or
"unknown" even). So this tells me that something is going through the
wires at least... Can't ping XP through the router diagnostics tools.

- tried static IP addresses and autoconfiguration in XP
- turned off dhcp in router and assigned static IP
- checked XP firewall is disabled
- uninstalled Zone Alarms
- uninstalled the network card and reinstalled it.
- turned everything off and reset everything in 1000 different
combinations.
- mucked around with "simple file sharing" and security policies (log
on as local user ie administrator)
- used network diagnostics in XP Help (which did nothing but confirm
that I couldn't ping the router, lol).

All my searching on the newgroups and web has exhausted the
possibilities of a problem with my settings, but I'd love to be wrong!
I am left to assume that the freezing associated with the ram problem
has damaged the network adapter.

Any help appreciated (checking back in 24 hours).

You could try and reset (factory reset) the D-Link router...but of course
you have to configure it again.

This is not directly related to your problem, but just so you know, d-link
has recently posted a new release of the DI-624 firmware. When you flash it
into your router it will reset all parameters to their factory default
values.

BTW, I posted a question a few days ago also on the DI-624 configuration
(Can't use D-Link DI-624 wireless router to connect to the internet). Do you
think you could post your configuration so I can compare it with mine maybe
I can spot the problem with mine.

Thanks for the firmware tip. I am now running firmware 2.5 after
factory-resetting the router promted by Wim Kamp.

As for your specific issue, I checked out your post. I'll gladly give
you configuration but which? The settings on the router or in the
computer? I know for example that the ipconfig settings in winxp and
win2000 look quite different.

In the router, I have DHCP set up (although static has worked too) in
the WAN settings I have "Dynamic IP Address" set as a default. In the
LAN settings, the IP of the Router is 192.168.0.1. You might want to
check that you IP address in the PC is within the range in the DHCP
settings.

I'll be on this forum as long as it takes to solve my prob, so feel free
to ask more specific details about my setup.

Hi Wim, I reset the router with no luck. At least i've now learnt how to
upgrade the firmware!

So you still can't ping your router? But it looks as if you can connect to
it and configure it using your internetbrowser?

Thanks for the info.

One more quick question. My other router (SMC) has NAT, and so does the 5660
DSL modem/router, and you can see all the mappings between WAN/LAN addresses
and ports, but I could not find a NAT page in the D-Link DI-624 setup.

Do you know how I could enable NAT or see the NAT mappings on the DI-624?

Yes, problem still exists between XP and router (can't ping it or
anything else ragardless of the port or the cables). I am connecting to
the router (and the internet) through a win2000 laptop (both hardwire
and wireless) without any problems at all (and thank god for that). So
this is mostly why I'm certain the problem is related to the box, or
maybe an XP setting that was screwed up.

Point me to the thread when posted, I'm no expert but I've had some
pretty stupid problems with my router so maybe I can offer something.
