You need to restore the Vista boot environment. Best to ask a Vista
newsgroup.

Changes need to be made to boot.ini as well as some others:

Download and install this program in your XP installation.

VistaBootPRO 3.3
http://www.vistabootpro.org/

Launch the program and click on System Bootloader.
Select Windows Vista Bootloader.
Select All Drives under the Install Options.
Hit the Install Bootloader button.
Note: You can also click on Manage OS Entries to set the order in which the
two operating systems are listed on the boot menu and which one is the
default.
Close the program and restart your computer.
You should now be see a screen with the option of which OS you want to boot
into.

Good luck

In the course of installing WinXP, you destroyed Vista's boot
management. You'll need to fix that.

This KB Article (not for the faint of heart or
technically-challenged) explains how to repair the Vista boot process
after installing WinXP:

Windows Vista no longer starts after you install an earlier version of
the Windows operating system in a dual-boot configuration

MS-MVP John Barnett's Guide is considerably more user-friendly:
