Some files open just fine but others do launch Excel but all I get is a blank
grey screen. The same files open just fine on other machines running the
same version of Excel. Any thoughts?

How are you opening the workbook?

Does it work if you
Open excel first
then use File|Open?

These files will not open either way on this particular workstation. They
also open normally on my machine which is running Office 2003 and they open
normally on other machines running Excel 2002.

Thanks

And you're positive that the files aren't opening?

If you "open" the file, then do File|Print preview, do you see anything?

If yes, try:
window|arrange|tiled

Sometimes, the files open, but the viewable area is off the display. (Happens
when the file is shared between desktop and laptop users.)

If no, try:
Window|Unhide
(maybe the workbook was hidden, then saved)

Thanks for your reply. None of your suggestions worked. It appears that the
file is open because the title displays in the header but the body is
completely grey and it opens on other machines using the same version of
Excel. We've uninstalled and re-installed Office twice now without success.
Any other ideas?

Thanks

There's a title bar for the application and a title bar for the worksheet
window.

It sounds like you're seeing the name of the workbook in the application's title
bar (Like Microsoft Excel - Book1.xls).

That means you should be able to see the worksheet window inside the
application's window.

And if you were seeing the name of the workbook in the application's title bar,
then you'd be able to see the worksheet.

I really don't have a guess that matches your description.

You tried arranging the window and it failed, right?

Maybe you could try that again.

Your're correct...I'm seeing the file name in the uppermost left-hand part of
the screen. I've tried all of your suggestions, which I appreciate, without
success. I guess I'll just uninstall it again and remove all of the registry
entries and try installing again. If that doesn't work, I'll recommend
upgrading to Office 03.

Thanks

If you can see the name of the workbook in the title bar, then that workbook's
worksheet window has to be maximized within excel.

My only other guess is that the columns and/or rows are hidden for that
worksheet.

Edit|goto|type:
1:65536
and hit enter
(this selects all the cells)

Format|row|unhide
format|column|Unhide

(and this doesn't make sense to me, since you said others can open it normally.)
