cannot open c drive. has 'Auto' in bold in right click menu

i freshly installed xp on my system and not its not opening the c drive. on
double click nothing happens. when i right click on the drive, the first
option i see is 'Auto' which is highlighted. it shold rather be 'Open'. when
i click on open of explore, the drive opens normally. can someone tell me how
to restore it back to Open?
