Can anyone please tell me why Windows Mail crashes ((Not Responding)
everytime I try and open or save an attachment?

The only way I can save an attachment is by first opening the e-mail and
then r.clicking on the attachment .... Save as ... but, even after saving it
using this method, Win Mail still crashes!!

HEP!!!

Any error messages? Do you have antivirus software set to scan email? See
www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

Thanks for the response, Steve.

Thanks also for that li9nk, but this is Windows Mail, not OE.

I have disabled AVG antivirus -- to no avail.

As soon as I try and open any attachment by clicking on the "paper clip" and
then on the attachment's name, the CPU usages shoots up to 80-95% and the
notebook's fan speed increases. After a few seconds, Win Mail displays <Not
Responding>.

Also, if I click on the X to close the application, I get a pop up message
with three options:

-> Check for a solution and restart the program
-> Close the program
-> ??????????????

You will not believe this, Steve, but while I was typing this message on
another pc, the problem seems to have resolved itself! Just to make sure, I
rebooted, allowing the antivirus to load, opened Win Mail and I was able to
open all attachments normally!!

This has been a problem since I got this new HP notebook about 10 days ago
here in Sydney (I am visiting Australia and NZ from South Africa at the
moment. That would explain the time difference, of course)!

WTF?

I'll keep checking and will repost here if need be.

Thanks, again, for trying to assist me Steve.

Hillbrow? Oh, you mean "Little Lagos", right?

BTW, the problem has not resurfaced ... yet!

I haven't changed my information here: www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 but
antivirus software is causing big problems for users of WinMail, so the same
applies if not more.

I'm having exactly the same problem as Steinie with Windows Mail --
attachments won't open, the program freezes and then closes. Also, links
won't open (here, nothing happens -- not even program failure). My antivirus
is Norton. I'd be really grateful for any pointers...

Thanks

Go to the Symantec website and get their removal tool and remove it
completely and then reboot. Then in WinMail, remove your mail accounts,
close and reopen WinMail and then add them back again.

Find an antivirus program that is less intrusive than Norton or McAfee.

I am having the same problem with Windows Mail not responding when I attempt
to open an attachment. This preplexes me because this was not happening
until 2 days ago. I have not had any other changes to my system. I am
running Norton Internet Security. Even with the email protection feature
turned off, Windows Mail continues to freeze up when I attempt to open an
attachment. This is very frustrating. Any advice?

Try uninstalling Norton Internet Security, not just disabling part of all of
it.

If you want a replacement antivirus program, here are two to consider:

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff

For either, use the custom install and tell it to leave out the part that
scans
email.
