I am new and desperately need help. When trying to make a backup copy of the
website(so that I can edit certain pages). After creating a new blank website
to hold the info transferred and opening the original website(from the
internet) in the local pane, I clicked local to remote and hit Publish Site.
Immediately, I get the following message "You specified identical destination
file names for some of the files you are trying to copy. Make sure all
destination files have unique names and try again". Can someone tells me what
it means? I desperately need the backup copy before I can do any work. Thanks
in advance.

In FP2003 whatever site/location you open first is considered your local, and the site/location you
will be publishing to is the remote. So if you open the live/remote site first in FP2003, it is then
consider to be your local and the location on your PC is the remote.

I understand that - My real website was open in the left(local) pane and I
had the blank new website on my PC open in the remote pane. So publishing
from local to remote should have transferred files from the internet into the
holder website on my PC. However, I still got the error message that makes no
sense as well as the fact that no files are transferred. Do you have any idea
what the message means?

With the live/remote site open, go to File Menu | Publish Site and enter the path C:\mywebsite and
see if that works.

I am so confused with the local/remote screen. i have tried to send files
back and forth to synchronize them and it stillcomes up "unmatched". I need
to know what to do to match both sides without changing the "real website"

If you are hosted on a non windows server that is case sensitive it will allow both files Index.htm and index.htm as 2 different
files
- but publishing to your remote (PC) will not allow those duplicate names
Check you site for duplicate file names

why did you create a new website to transfer them into?
just use the import feature to get a copy of your remote files into FP.
You don't need to create the web for them to go into
I think that's what is generating the errors

just do it this way:
in FrontPage hit file/ open web (or site). type in the http: // address of
your online web, give the UN/PW when prompted.
when the live web opens for you hit file/ publish web (or site) and in the
publish destination dialog box hit the browse button and browse your local
computer for the empty web you created for the back up copy (don't just
publish it down into an existing web or you'll have a mess).
