Cannot log on to Frontpage enabled server

I am trying to log on to server to edit live....and
authentication failed...I cannot log on through the
Frontpage Open > Web > My Network Places > <URL>

I get the prompt for logon details which are correct, and
th server does (or should) have server extensions for FP
2002 enabled including the ability to publish/edit via
the http: in Frontpage.

Log file message : "The web server does not appear to
have any authentication methods enabled It asked for
user authentication, but did not send a www-authenticate
header."

What exactly does this mean?

I am working at a client's computer and had the intention
of training them in editing the site (live) rather than
uploading/downloading method via FP's FTP or 3rd party
ftp - and they are running Win XP pro with Frontpage 2000
(from Office 2000 Premium)

Does it make a difference that I'm using FP 2000 to log
on to a 2002 SE enabled server?

What is the recommended solution - if nothing else
besides upgrading to FP2003. This is a non-profit
organisation.

I don't know if this is something do their firewall or
not, or possibly an ISP/Host problem.

Any solutions or suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks

Andrew Murray

Andrew,

The first thing I would check is to verify it is not a server issue. You can do this easily by trying to open the web live using your computer, as it sounds like you have not had a problem with that.

If you are able to open the web fine, then look for a firewall issue on your clients computer. I have my firewall setup to authenticate everytime I open a web live or View the remote website from 2003, so if I decline the action my webs will not open or I will be unable to connect to the server.

I personally have never seen any issues opening a web live with various versions on various computers, as long as the host company has the extensions installed properly.

Hope this helps in any way!

JDR,
Thanks for the reply, I will pass it on to our network
techie - I was able to edit the site live from my own PC
so I have concluded it might be a firewall issue locally
except I'm not sure of the set up here.

Thanks again.

Also try directly
File Open Web and enter your URL as
http://www.yoursitename.com/
or browse to the site in IE and try File Edit w/ FP
- if you get the same error it is a server authentication setup error

- FP2000 will work w/ the FP 2002 SE
