Cannot load Windows XP pro in normal mode

After installing Windows XP Pro, first the computer hangs for about 70 seconds at the "Applying computer settings" stage and then freezes completely (with the egg timer) at the "applying your personal setings" stage. I want to install this on only one computer so do not need network settings at the moment. Can anybody help me please?
