Hello All,
I am not able to load google home page (www.google.com) on one of my home
computers. Also, if a website uses google-analytics, it will time out there
and eventually load the page (ie. yahoo.com). I am not on a domain and I do
not run a personal DNS. It seems that it is machine-specific, and not
network related because my other computers can access google fine. Has
anyone heard of some virus/spyware/malware that can cause this?

I have run counterspy and hijack this! and I am unable to locate anything
that would cause this issue.

BTW, The machine in question is using winxpsp2 with IE7, Firefox 2.0.3, and
netscape8 (I have tried all the browsers also, and still no google!)

TIA,
Altria

First try to change it in Safe Mode and see if you could manage to change it!.
If not then proceed with following, bear in mind if your have Protection
software like Anti-Virus or Anti-Spyware can block changing the Homepage you
need to go through these programs Option to configure them to allow you to
change the Homepage:
Open a run command and type in:
regedit.exe and click [OK] on the Registry Editor locate the following:
Change the Home page in the following KEYS:
Click on *Main*
[+]HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main.

and look in Right Pane/Window and Locate *Start Page* Right
Click on it and select Modify and enter the Data say for ex;
http://www.google.com as your Home page and then Locate also this *Local
Page* and Right Click on it and select Modify and put the following;
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm

The same with this KEY:
[+] HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
On the *Start Page* change it into http://www.google.com

Leave the *Local Page* as it is if it have this string of Data:
http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd={SUB_PRD}...... etc

Close the Registry and Open the IE Properties by Right Click on the Icon on
your Desktop and select Properties from the drop down list.
On the IE window click on Programs Tab and click on Manage Add-Ons, in the
Add-Ons window Disable Add-Ons for Non-MS IE Add-Ons (ZA, Safer network..etc)
and click OK.
On the same window click *Reset web Settings* and click Apply/OK and Reboot
your computer and see if the new home page is set.
HTH.
Let us know.

nass

Hello nass,

Thanks for your response.

These entries were already present in the registry. It is not solely a IE
problem but with any browser (ie. Firefox, Opera, etc..). I am able to
traverse any site except google...that is the problem. Even in safe mode it
will not load. I am about to reinstall unless someone has some other advice.
I am not sure what went wrong because I have not made any changes to the
machine, router, etc. and my other machines work fine!

TIA,
Altria

Well I figured it out, or I should say I just stumped across a fix. I ended
up removing/adding the network device and changing the IP address of the
workstation and....POP!... up came google again
Not sure what went wrong but hope it is helpful to others...

Thanks,
Altria
