I am trying to access my website files on the server from
a remote location (WAN)via Frontpage (open file/ftp
locations/www.ect).

I can see the files on the ftp location however when I try
to open them in order to amend an error message pops
up "Server extensions do not support this action on ftp
servers".

How can a client access the files in order to amend them ?

thks

You must open the site directly in FP via http, not FTP.

If the site has the FP SE always open and publish w/ http mode

FP is not a Ftp client (even though it will publish in FTP mode) so it won't allow you to open a site in FTP
