cannot load Archive.pst file

Outlook 2003. I have very large Archive file 6.5GB which I now cannot load
having done so without problems until very recently. Error message:
thedatafile was not closed properly - file being checked for problems. after
the check there is a delay an the error message: an error occured which
prevented the file Archive.pst from being saved.
Please advise if there is a solution. I have carried out a repair with SCANPST
