cannot load any web pages.

      5th Feb 2006
have a new laptop running XP home edition. Can logon to the internet thru my
ISP using dialup no problem but unable to load any web pages. Error message
is "the page cannot be displayed".
LAN in internet options is set to automatically detect settings. help!!!!!

While you're connected, go to a command prompt, and type

ipconfig /all

See what default gateway server you've been given. Try to ping it...

ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx <enter>

Then if that works, see if you can ping your DNS server IP(s) the same way.

If that works, try

ping www.google.com

Report back with your results.

can you ping a public IP? If yes, can you ping yahoo.com? this slink may help,

If you can't ping anything, then your DNS isn't set correctly. Does your
ISP require special software to be installed (like NetZero)? If so, did
you install it? Check with your ISP to make sure your settings are
correct since you are using dialup.

thanks for the help thus far, guys.
no luck yet.
I,ve hooked it up thru wired connection to the DSL modem. Can logon to ISP
no problem but still cannot surf. Can ping Default Gateway address but cannot
ping IP address. PC and another laptop work fine on same connection.
