I get the message "the specified domain either does not
exist or could not be contacted. I have installed Win2K
Pro as I have for the past 15 machines and have not had
any issues. Installed this one exactly the same way and I
get this error message. I installed 2 machines after this
and didn't have a problem.

Any ideas of what is causing this machine to be so
stubborn?

Sounds like it could be connectivity issues. Can you ping the DC? Can
you ping the DNS name of the DC?

No, I cannot. I can loopback and the network card is
working find. Device manager says that the network card
is fine, but it just won't see anything but itself.

If you can't ping the DC by IP Address you have connectivity issues I
would think. Does the NIC have a link light? Check the status of the LAN
connection and see if it has transferred any packets. Could be your port
you are plugged into, very well could be the NIC too....just because
windows sees it and says it all looks good doesn't mean it is.

First thing I would do is try another machine on that port. Bring in a
laptop, jack it into the port that machine is on and see if you can get
network activity. If you can, replace the NIC in the original machine
and try again. If you can't get network access with the laptop, you will
need to check the wiring/jack or the switchport.

The NIC card has lights. Packets are not being sent. I
have pulled the NIC out and dropped it into another
machine and used the same port. Works fine.

Thanks, Pam

Hmm, whats IPCONFIG look like? You might /release and /renew to refresh
it. A bit hard to go any further without knowing how/what you have setup
on your network. DHCP server, DNS server, etc? How the clients are setup
according to that info.

Ipconfig has:
192.168.101.97
255.255.255.0
192.168.101.254

I understand the confusion. The issue that boggles me is
that I have 3 machines side by side-all set up with Win2K
Pro, all at the same time. I didn't do anything different
between the machines, just added them to the domain. 2
machines connected without a hitch, the 3rd one gives me
this error.

You might want to try giving the PC a static IP address
and then join it to the domain.

Check you AD also and see if a computer account for that
machine has been created. If there is one, delete it
after you join the workgroup.
