Before you go tearing into your computer
Download and run Memtest86:

Chances are that if you run Windows 2000 successfully you don't have a
problem with a memory module.
Some moire information about what you're trying to accomplish would be
helpful.
Are you trying to upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows XP?
Are you trying to dual-boot 2K and XP?
What make and model is your computer?
How much RAM?
Make and size of your hard disk?
Hard disk partitioning, if any?
Service pack level of XP you're trying to install (integrated SP2?)
