Please tell me what I am doing wrong

I have win xp pro as my primary os located on drive C
I have downloaded the win xp pro x 64 trial as an ISO file...........this
can onlty be installed as a boot off the cd

OK
I configure the bios to boot from cd and start to install the program to a
partition called D, it loads all of the files and closes down and then
starts up again and starts to reinstall all of the files again, this time
when it gets to the place where it asks me where I want to install it, it
says that it cannot install it to D as there is already an os on that
partition.

Why can I not get the rest of the os to install to that partition?

You need to set up a Multi Boot system because you can only have one
boot.ini on a computer on the main boot up drive. Here is a link as to how
to do Multi OS boot.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...bootsystem.asp

At this point the computer should be booting from the hard drive, not
the CD.
