cannot install from self extracting exe after sp2 upgrade

i finally did the sp2 upgrade. it was a clean installation using my recovery
disks folowing byt letting windows update do it's thing. while update works
ok and i can install office from cd and defender downloads/installs, nothing
that comes as a self extracting exe will install (adobe reader, etc). error
is always setup.exe has encountered a problem.
