CANNOT INSTALL OUTLOOK INSTANT SEARCH

I have Office and Outlook 2007 . At the top of my Outlook inbox is an orange
bar that says 'Click here to enable Instant Search'. When I click on it, it
takes me to a webpage where I download a 4.7MB file whose name ends in
'enu.exe'.

When I run the .exe file, an error message appears that says: 'Setup has
failed. Make sure Terminal Services are enabled before re-running setup'.

It never gets any further than that. I remember it was the same with the
Office 2007 Beta.

What is wrong? Why won't instant search install? Help, please!

Try running the Office Diagnostics from the Help menu in Outlook...see if
that helps any.

Hi. I ran all the diagnostics but no problems found.

Am I downloading the right file? What is the other one, the MSI file?

I am also unable to install Messenger Live - I get eternally spinning
buddies; but that's another saga that no-one on here has been able to answer.

No more ideas on the Instant Search? It's not a show-stopper but it's
annoying.

Thanks

In my research I found that the current policy for naming hotfixes and
patches is to end the filenames with "enu.exe", so that must be what you did.
I haven't found any other posts about your specific issue so far, but do you
know what the full filename of the file you installed was?

Hi

When I click on the "Click here to enable Instant Search" bar, it takes me
to this web page:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

If you page down, you will see there are two files. The one I am installing
is this:
WindowsDesktopSearch-KB917013-V301-XP-x86-enu.exe

and the other one is this:

WindowsDesktopSearch-KB917013-V301-XP-x86-ENU.MSI

Thanks.

I guess you can try downloading and installing the .MSI file instead of the
..EXE and see if it works...I will have to do a little more looking around to
see if anyone else has reported this issue. Have you also downloaded and
installed all available Windows and Office updates?

Hi Jocelyn

I downloaded the other file (the .MSI one) and exactly the same error
message appeared about 'terminal services'.

Stumped!

OK. I will do some more research...if I find anything, I will get back to
you. If you get no response for several days you can repost your question to
see if anyone else has any other ideas, but please make sure you post all the
details of what you've already tried, including my suggestions.

Hi William

I tried this but when I right-click on Terminal Services in the list, the
'Start' option is greyed out (as are Stop, Pause, Resume, Restart). The
options All Tasks, Refresh, Properties, Help are selectable. Under All
Tasks, the five options Start, Stop, Pause, Resume, Restart are greyed out
again.

I think this one is going to be like my Messenger Live spinning buddies -
insoluble!
