Trying to install MDAC 2.8 on an XP Pro machine I get "setup cannot be
completed because an error was encountered during setup". No other
messages. Machine has all updates (except IE7). Tried disabling AV and
killing unnecessary processes. Also cleared out temp folders. Logged on as
admin, same thing.

I did Google, but didn't come across those. Thanks, I'll take a look.

You cannot install MDAC 2.8 if you have SP2 installed. Try installing
MDAC 2.81, or reinstall SP2. Or see if this can help:
http://www.macropool.com/en/download/mdac_xp_sp2.html
