Cannot install IE7 Beta without disabling WD

Apparently, that was the problem for me. I had to disable WD (not easy to
do). I did in services.msc. I had to disable and stop it. IE 7 would balk
at installing msfeeds.dll and installation would fail. I am not sure that
exiting from WD would work. MSMPEng.exe remains in memory, but maybe it
doesn't interfere if one exits from within MSAScui.exe. I made sure it was
stopped.

I've only installed IE7Beta on one machine, but I didn't have this
experience. Windows Defender was definitely up and running at the same
time.

On your system--is there other antispyware software running?

No problem here also when installing IE7B2 on two PC running XP Pro with
WD installed and running as was the AV application (Avast on one and EZ on
the other).

Well, all I can say is that it wouldn't work until I did. They confirmed it
over at IE forum; however, it may only be sporadic. WLOC and WD are all I
use. Disabling WLOC didn't do the trick.

I will add that the problem involved msfeeds.dll not initializing, and
others have had it but not all. So it may only show up with people who have
RSS (or whatever it is) installed. Just guessing.

That's a possiblity--I haven't done much with RSS. However--installing IE7
beta requires uninstalling the previous version first, correct?

I've done that on a laptop which has both Windows defender and OneCare
installed--without any problems--i.e. went from previous IE7 beta back to
ie6, restarted, did a bunch of updates, then went to the newest IE7
beta--without any glitches.

Yes, one has to uninstall the last public preview beta (January, I think).
Some folks say you have to reboot twice. It all seems like voodoo. Anyhow,
after several tries and several hours on the first one, I started booting
twice, running registry cleaners inbetween, disabling WLOC and WD, etc. I
had no further troubles. I did the last one and didn't do anything, but
uninstall and reboot, and it worked fine with WLOC and WD purring along. So
who knows? I posted as a heads up so some might avoid the frustration I
had. Only who of these four had used RSS. And not the last one I did, so I
have no definitive evidence on any of it.

BTW, FWIW, either of these Beta 7s are far superior to IE6. They are more
secure, rock solid, rarely find a page that doesn't display right, seem to
crash much less often. I have only had the "we are sorry but IE must close
now" message once with IE7. Which is why I put it on my three PCs and my
work PC. Of course, we know we are playing with fire, but I find that MS
public beta software is usually pretty reliable. Usually being the
operative word. Of course, I may end up having to reinstall Windows from
scratch if something goes wrong, but it is not as if I hadn't done it
before.

By the way, back to WD, another install of WD (on my laptop) stopped
updating and I had to uninstall WD and reinstall it. That means that 0 of
my original installs with the original download remains. I reinstalled with
the 2/23/06 Beta 2. So far none of these, I think, have failed.

Oh, and finally Bill, I hadn't notice the MVP after your name before. Is
this recent? Whether recent or not, congrats. A long, long time ago in a
Galaxy far away I was a MS Money MVP. It was very nice until they found out
all the other Money MVPs answered all the questions. LOL. Actually I was a
teacher at school without a computer (then) and all the questions would be
answered by the time I signed on. I always appreciate the time and effort
people give on these forums! Thanks.

I have been installing IE7 off and on the last few days and have not hit
this condition. Can you provide any more details?

Alas, Steve, I cannot. My RSS support has gone out again with the Mar 20
Beta. The problems showed up in the install where it balked at installing
MSFeeds.dll. There the install would end. It is possible that editing
permissions in the registry for .tif and .tiff extensions had something to
do with it. That and closing down WinDefender were suggested in the IE
forum. I did both.

FWIW, RSS, after working Sunday, is not working again today. It had stopped
working in the previous beta too. I restored some registry check fixes but
it didn't make any difference.
