cannot install drivers for HDD

I installed a maxtor 6L200PO hard drive as my primary slave drive.
As far as I can see, the installation was successful (my operating
system
run etc) except for one thing: each time I boot up WinXP I get an
annoying
error message to the effect that there was a problem installing the
drive
and that "one of the filter drivers installed for this drive is
invalid." I
checked in Device Manager, and I found that DISK.SYS is not installed
for
this drive although the other two necessary drivers (DRVMCDB.SYS and
PARTMGR.SYS) are. I do not have this problem in Win2000 or Win98.
Western
Digital says this is a Windows problem. How do I install DISK.SYS as
one of
the drivers for this hard drive and thereby remedy this annoyance?

Thanks for your help.

DRVMCDB.SYS is not an XP driver and could be associated with a burning app or
malware, see link below..
http://www.file.net/process/drvmcdb.sys.html
Check for malware or try uninstalling Sonic and uninstall the drive in
device manager and let windows find it again after you reboot.
Have you tried to update the driver manually..? Look in the properties
window for the drive, driver tab, update driver button, in the Wiz check no
not at this time, check the advanced option, check don't search option, next,
select the signed driver and finish up and reboot..

Hi guys, thanks for the links. I deleted drvmbd (it's a Veritas file) from
system32\drivers and could not reboot anymore. I had to recopy the file back
into system32\drivers to start the system again;

I also tried to deinstall the drive in device manager, rebooted but XP
could'nt find the drivers.

I think the problem is that the disk.sys driver is not installed; on the
other primary master drive all 3 drivers mentionned in my previous posting,
are installed.

Here's a report from Everest. I'm sorry it's in French but you willl see
that the Maxtor drive shows no drivers at all.

You should uninstall the Veritas software from add remove programs and not
just yank the driver..
You could try this too, open an explore window, search, disk.inf, C: drive,
check advanced.. Highlight the disk.inf C:\windows\inf file and right click,
open containing folder, right click disk.inf and click install..
Post your results..

Scan for malware, Spyware and Viruses too, see link below..

I have the same drive or similar to yours, mine works fine, see my Everest

Hi,

I cannot find any entries about Veritas software;nowhere, I even installed
Process Explorer from Sysinternals but could'nt find any entires pointing to
Veritas software or drivers.

You know what's strange? I have 2 drives in my machine, the Maxtor one and a
Seagate which has all the drivers installed as you can see in the Everest
report.

Now I tried, just for fun, to update the drivers for my Seagate drive, and
you know what, i could'nt update those drivers either, it showed me the
same error message I got while trying to install the drivers for the Maxtor
HD; strange, ins'nt it?

Have a nice day.

Ok, Go back to device manager and open the properties window for the drive,
details tab and scroll down to Class Upper Filters and you should see
PartMgr, you have Partition Magic, right..? You should also just see the
Drvmcdb entry any others there..?
Look through these sites to find your product and determine how to uninstall
or ask customer support.. You may find a driver update or a software update
for your specific Veritas/Symantec product that might update the driver too..
If your not using it anyway it might be better to uninstall it period and
for good, you can always reinstall it latter or upgrade to the newer version..

Hope this can help you..
Post your results..

Hi Jaymon, thanks for your reply.
Yes I have Part. Magic 8 and Ghost9 installed but under the details tab all
I see is the entry IDE\DISKMAXTOR_6L200P0__________and the a large sequence
of numbers. No other entries there. Same thing for the other drive.

As shown in the Everest report my (old)Seagate HD had drivers and the new
Maxtor did'nt. I searched in \windows\inf for oem* and moved all these files
into another folder, then I deleted the infcache.1 and rebooted my machine.

Now a the 2 HD's are without drivers.

Have a nice day.

Hi again,

I deleted all Symantec software using the symantec remval tool; I also
deleted Part.Magic8, can still not install HD drivers.

I guess I have no more Veritas software installed now.
Thanks.
