Cannot install a digitally signed printer

I have been trying to install a Brother 2040 printer on an XP machine. I
have downloaded the driver from the Brother web site and it says that this
printer is digitally signed for XP. However whenever I run the Install
Printer wizard I get the message that the "driver is not digitally signed."
When I run the printer wizard I do not get a list of hardware vendors and
the list of signed printers for each of them.
I have the latest driver and have installed service pack 2.
Any ideas about what to do?

You do not have to have digitally signed drivers if you are running 32 bit
Windows. Does the install continue if you choose not to use digitally
signed drivers?

If the driver you downloaded from the Brother website is an exe file, you
should not be using Add Printer Wizard, just running the exe file.

The driver was not an exe file, but a zip file. So that didn't help either.
I appreciate your taking the time to help, but I am sure that some file or
files are hopelessly corrupted. With PC prices as low as they are, it is
probably time to replace this one, save the data and go on.

Thanks again for your help.

Did you unzip the file your downloaded? If so, is it one file (and exe) or
multiple files?
