I have been trying to import video from a DVD-R, but MM2 doesn't recognize
the file type that these clips are saved as. When I hold the cursor over the
file icon in my E drive, it says that the type is VOB. How can I resave
these clips from the DVD and import them into MM2? No one can give me a
straight answer on this question. PLEASE HELP!!!

You are correct....WMM will not import a VOB file...
Have a look at the following site:

Movie Maker 2 - Importing Video from Discs
http://www.papajohn.org/MM2-Importing-Video-Discs.html

Also, searching the windowsxp.moviemaker
newsgroup for VOB in the Google Groups archive
turns up quite a few messages. Try the following

Thank you for the link ... but how do I change the VOB file to an MPG file?
Simply renaming the file does not change the file type. Thanks for the help.

The renaming is simply to let TMPGEnc open the file for conversion to other
ones. With the VOB extension it doesn't accept it.

It's an MPEG utility mentioned on my website page, and the link to download
it is on the Setup Movie Maker > Other Software page of my website....

There are other tools that you can use.... I'm just giving the procedure for
the ones I use...
