Using this 2nd hand win 2000 prof sp4 with IE5. When I lauch the IE, the home
apge will appears but I cannot vhange to any website asn an error message "
page cannot be displayed'

I have updated the chipset of this compaq (downloaded from another pc) but
unable to upate the bios. The mobo has the default lan but it not not detect
it. When I insert a RTL8129 lan, it will detect as EdmixN -9130TX PCI fast
ethernet. Whwn I plug the cadle into default lan it will not show any
connected, but wehn I plug into the RTL8129, it show connectivity

I suppose first thing is to update IE5 ot IE6. Can I use the MS Security CD?
How can I clear the active X. Appreciate uf you can assit to resolve the
issue, thanks

You need to start with your network components and forget about chipsets,
motherboards or versions of IE. Here are the questions you should ask
yourself?
- Does the Device Manager recognise your network adapter?
- If yes, is it visible in "Network Connections"?
- If yes, can you manage its properties?
- If yes, is the TCP/IP protocol loaded?
- If yes, what are the TCP/IP settings? You may need to run the
command ipconfig.exe /all from a Command Prompt to see
them all.
- How do you connect to the Internet? With a dial-up modem? ADSL?
Cable modem? Other?
- What is the IP address of that device?

DM recognisd the network adapter and tcp/ip and obtained ip add automatically
and obtain DNS server add automatically
command>ipconfig /all>ip add 192.168.2.106 and gateway 192.168.2.1
I used dial upbroadband through a router
I have no problem in goint to the net with another pc.

Launch IE, "page cannot be displayed" When i try to closed it, it gives an
error message "iexplorer.exe-Application error
The instruction at 0x779d... refers memory at 0x0000000f. The memory cannot
be ready". Does that means it has something to do with the Ram? Thanks

*** Great. What about the DNS Server address?

*** Very unlikely. Your IE installation is probably damaged. Try using
Firefox.

DNS 192.168.1.1 // 16x.yy.zz.aa // 16x.yy.ccc.aa and its the same when I use
the other pc. (someone told me not to write the exact DNS on the internet,
forwhatever reasons that may be).

If IE5 is corrupted, now how do I install IE6 then? Do I have to uninstall
IE5 first and use the MS Security CD or the cd provided by the ISP that have
the IE6? Thanks

In the first instance I would leave IE5 alone and try Firefox. If it works
then you can install IE6 from whereever you can get it. You should, in fact,
have installed IE6 several years ago. IE5 has some severe security risks.
We're now running IE7 . . .

Have installed IE6 and it will go to home page but if u change to the
previous visited site, it will show "page cannot displayed error" Further it
takes ages to shut down the pc, I mean ages 20 minutes ////Prior to install
IE6 it shut down pretty fast. What could be wrong?

Hmm. No. WinXP. Didn't think of that one.
