First take care of the hijackware infections.

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

Checking for/Help with Hijackware

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html,
http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or other appropriate forums for expert
analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Hello,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

From your post, I'd like to thanks our MVP PA Bear for his kindly input.

You may try to use the following tools:
Download and install Windows Defender (Beta 2)
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx

Use spy-killer to scan your computer completely.
More information about spy-killer, please refer to link below:
http://www.spy-killer.com/

Run Ad-Aware (free version)
http://www.lavasoft.de

SpyBot
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

On the virus/malware issue, if you are in the US/Canada, I would like to
suggest that you call Microsoft PC Safety telephone number, 1-866-727-2338
(1-866-PCSAFETY). This service offers no-charge assistance for
virus-related issues or questions.

Also, you can check Microsoft Security and Privacy Web site at:

This Web site offers various articles, updates, tips and tricks, and
resources to protect both home and business computers from virus infection
or attacks.

I hope the above information helps. However, since it was previously
infected by virus, it is unknown what other issues we may encounter. For
the virus related issue, it is always recommended that we backup personal
data and format the hard drive, and then reinstall the whole operating
system.

Thanks & Regards,

Ken Zhao

I think I found the answer:

Right click on My Computer Select properties Select System restore Check
turn off system restore Apply and reboot computer

This will delete all restore points including viruses backed up there.
Remeber to turn system restore back on.

Uh, Ken, thanks for your kind words, but let me point out that the final
version of Defender was released 6 months ago (Oct-06). You may want to
update your "canned reponse" to reflect this.

Huh?

While it's a good idea to "flush" System Restore
(http://bertk.mvps.org/html/disablesr.html) /after/ making sure the
machine's totally clean [1] (which I don't think it is yet), the mere
presence
of these Restore Points doesn't affect your ability to use Windows Updates,
and only pose a risk if you /use/ one of them.

IOW, you've got more work to do. See my previous reply.

[1] You do NOT want to "flush" System Restore until this point: Better a
leaky life-boat than no life-boat at all! <wink>

Let me clarify:

the virus's were in the restore folders. so i wanted to remove them.
Whatever the virus had done to the machine it was not letting me download
windows updates and i could install windows defender but I was not able to
download the latest files from MS to make it current. my host files were not
altered and I did not find any redirection going on.

I got rid of the /_restore folders and then everything was fine. did windows
updates and defender updated itself. looks like that was the trick

Thanks,
