Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there
is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a
sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use
by another program, or it may not be functioning properly.

I get this all the time now, I have heard it is a problem
with the latest update anybody else having any problems?

Hope below steps will help:
Rightclick sound icon (bottom righthand corner of
monitor) and click "Adjust Audio Properties" then Audio
tab, then Advanced button under Sound playback then
Performance tab then slide the slider bar to the left one
click under Hardware Acceleration and Sample rate.
Adjusting the sliders may solve your problem, or else you
may need a new sound card.

I am having a similar problem but with no error code, when I open media player (version ??)and try to play a music CD it wants to connect to the net to play the CD,when I "cancel" I get an error message that I need to insert "the removable media containing the file". The DVD/CD-RW drive and sound card are working as I have played a CD using the 'Power DVD'software.I have also re-installed Windows XP and Installed SP1 but none have solved the problem.I don't recall deleting any files or anything like that but it stopped working suddenly.
