Cannot get DVD movies to play

I installed an LG DVD player/recorder in my computer, which runs Win XP SP3
and Windows Media Player 11.

The DVD player works fine for copying and burning DVDs and CD's but when I
insert a Netflix movie DVD, I get a message: WMP cannot play the DVD because
there is a problem with Digital Copy Protection between your drive, decoder
and video card.

However, the same Netflix DVD plays just fine in my regular DVD player that
is hooked up to my TV.

When I try to run some older DVDs I get the pictures, but no sound.

Do I need some additional software to get my DVDs going?

Thanks for any help

You need a DVD decoder. See:

Was there a CD that came with the LG DVD player ?

Perhaps it has a DVD player application on it ?

Sometimes, there are differences between "retail" and
"OEM" drive mechanisms. I bought a "retail" GH22 and it
comes in a box, complete with a software CD. Considering
the price for the package, it was worth it.

above link.

It's odd that this MS Link peddles only commercial codecs for $ 10 to $ 50.
It would have been nice if MS could have thrown in their own free codec.

Try the following free player:

VLC Media Player
http://www.videolan.org/

Or you might consider installing the following codec package:

CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack)
http://www.cccp-project.net/
I suggest you read the FAQ

Hello,

Most likely you already have a DVD player installed on your system if your
previous drive was a DVD drive. Look for names like Intervideo or CyberDVD
in the list of programs in your start menu.

You may also need to set the region code for your drive. See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308012 for other DVD related problems and
guides
