I just installed this software and it scans a number of files and then it
just stops with the 'error found 0x800efe - the program can't check for
definition updates'.
what does this mean?
What can I do now?

I think you may not have typed the error code correctly.

Please include what Operating System and Service Pack level are you using?,
version of Internet Explorer? and what other antivirus or antimalware
software Security suite you may have installed, and firewall, etc. etc.
