Hi all

I just updated Canon scanner drivers. Now, each time I start the PC, it
loads CSTBox.exe.

After looking at the usual suspect locations, I ran Sysinternals Autoruns
and still found nothing. Does anyone know where I might find what is
starting this program?

Google produced lot's of 'free scan' sites but nothing that helps me find
out why CSTBox starts.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I'll say CSTBox.exe means something
like Canon Scanner Tool Box.

I will also guess that it has something to do with the Canon scanner
you have.

Is it running in Task Manger and you want to know why?

I imagine it gets installed with the scanner software and has some
Canon scanner related tools in it. It may have been something that
gets installed optionally when the software installation. You may or
may not care about these tools.

If you do not want it to run automatically for some reason, you might
be able to remove it though Add/Remove programs. You might have to
remove all the Canon software and reinstall without the option for the
tool box. You can also delete the executable, but that is not always
very hygienic.

You will probably find the executable file under C:\Program Files\Canon
\<something or another>.

If it runs every time you restart and you don't want it to, uninstall
it, delete the file, remove it from the registry in the place where
programs that are set to run automatically are located, probably under
the usual suspect location of:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If it is in the registry to run automatically, it really should show
up in Autoruns. In Autoruns (after it scans everything), click File,
File and enter CSTBox and find it in the registry key listed above.
Now you can decide to let Autoruns take care of it by deleting it from
the registry, or disabling it or just leave it.

This will not remove the file from your system, just keep it from
running next time you boot. You can always run it manually if you
need to or put it back in Autoruns by checking the box and rebooting.

If it is one or the other places but not both, you have another
problem.

Later, you can alwyas double click it or go to Start, Run and run the
executable from there if it is not already running.

Or, you could have some malicious software disguising itself as
CSTBox.exe in which case you should run something like these free
softwares:

Malwarebytes
SuperAntiVirus
AVG

Download them, install, update, full scan. It would not hurt to do
that anyway.

You are in luck. I found a computer with a Canon scanner and it has a
program installed called "Canon Scan Gear Toolbox".

When I run it, SGTbox.exe shows up in Task Manager and the tool box
opens. In the configuration Prefs tab for the tool box, there is an
option to Load on Windows Startup or not. It may be set to do this
automatically, so turn it off.

This will add a registry entry called to start the tool box when
Windows starts in:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

That will show up in Autoruns.

It puts an icon in the Notification Area. If you exit the program
through the icon options, it disappears from Task Manager. If you
close the program by clicking the X, it goes away, but remains in Task
Manager and leave the program running in the Notification Area,
probably what they want. It just closes the tool box, but leaves it
running.

You can kill the SGTbox.exe (in my case) will no bad consequences.

No limb is necessary. I own a Canon Scanner too, and I can confirm
that that's exactly what CSTBox is.

The Canon Scanner Toolbox is the program used to scan something and
send it wherever you want--printer, e-mail, pdf, OCR program, etc.
However at least here, it does not start automatically.

I get it.

I surmise from the OP when he says "Now, each time I start the PC, it
loads CSTBox.exe." he means he sees it in Task Manager - maybe, or he
has somehow figured out that it is running, doesn't know what it is,
and/or doesn't want it running automatically.

Here, it is called SGTbox.exe for this no frills scanner, and has a
Settings dialog window.

The scanner toolbox can be set to start with Windows on a reboot or
not. It will show up as an icon in the Notification area if it starts
automatically. If not set to automatic, and then you choose to start
it from Programs, it sticks around unless you chose to exit from the
Notification area icon. Xing the dialog box closes the toolbox but
leaves it running.

I don't know if the CSTBox has settings, does yours (curious).

Anyway, it is easy to understand and should be totally in his
control. Hopefully he will be good to go.

So, you cannot explain why it was starting itself automatically?

I said 'was' in the above because it did not start by itself this morning.
Yet, for about five re-starts after upgrading the drivers, it loaded itself
each time, as if one of the button is pressed. The scanner is well clear of
accidental button-touching. So, its not a case of accidental activation.
Since nobody can offer an alternate start-up location, I'll put it down to
intermittent failure of one of the switches and disconnect the USB lead when
not required.
