My daughter cannot find a rather ordinary sound device (or I should say windows xp cannot find it) after she had to format and re-install windows xp from the MS CD original.

The sound did work before, same computer, same sound device, same everything as far as I can tell when I saw her.

I think the desktop has a speed of about 1.6 GHz, 512 MB RAM. Same speakers and all are connected as before. Never were disconnected.

Any ideas? She does not have any special soundcard from creative.

Is sound enabled in the BIOS ? It could be AC'97 type, and there
could be a BIOS setting for it.

Installing a driver would also help. Check the manufacturer web site
for a driver package for the AC'97 sound, if that is what it is using.

If you need further help, mention make and model of computer (if
bought at the store) or motherboard make and model (if built at
home).

I only know it is a NEC computer.

I sent her some free SW to check out the rest. (AIDA32)

There should have been a driver CD with the PC.
It is normal practice to run this CD immediately after doing the base
reinstall from the XP CD.
This will install the drivers for the hardware that XP has not detected
during it's hardware detection phase.

If your daughter does not have the CD tell her to go to the NEC website and
look at the support / download section for the drivers.
Make sure she gets the drivers for her 'exact' model.

Best
Paul.
