Two weeks ago, I updated Windows 2000 with SP4 and all
patches available, including KB823559 and KB823890. I also
updated Internet Explorer 6 to SP1 and the Q330994 patch,
and applied all patches that Windows Update suggested.
Since then, Internet Explorer gets a "Cannot find server"
error no matter what website I go to. I am also unable to
access any secure website using my AOL browser, even after
turning all security settings to Low.

I suspect that it is related to the new entry on my Start
bar; "Set Program Access and Defaults." However, I have
tried many different settings in that control panel with
no change.

I have fixed this problem, although I am not quite sure
why it worked. What I did is change some of my McAfee
Firewall settings from "filter" to "allow." The settings I
changed were on AOL (AOL, AOL Topspeed, AOL Connectivity
Service), on IE (IE ver 6) and a couple of MicroSoft
settings (Generic Host, LSA Executable). However, I then
changed each back to its original setting of "filter" and
everything is still working. I changed my Security and
Privacy settings back to Medium and everything is still
working.

I am going to try a System Reset and make sure there isn't
some temporary fix. If so, I will post what I find.
