Just removed a whole slew of viruses, trojans, and
spyware from a customer's XP pc. The pc was on a cable
modem with no firewall or av software. This resolved a
whole host of problems it was experiencing.

Now, I can't get IE6 to find a page on the internet. I
get the "The page could not be found" DNS error. I can
ping a public domain name and IP address from the command
prompt, so the connection and dns server is good.

So far, I've tried removing and re-installing IE6 from
the Control panel windows components section; resetting
the Internet IP config using netsh int ip reset command;
removing and reinstalling the network interface card; and
restoring to the time before I did anything (which it
refused to do). Same results.

There is evidence that Norton Internet Security was
installed at one time, but it is not on the pc now.

I'm about to do a repair install of XP and then a new
install if necessary, but don't want to ruin what the
customer has installed to date.

Anybody have any suggestions before I kill this beast?

TIA,
Ken

Try repairing your winsock connection. Paste this link
into your windows explorer if IE doesn't work and look at
the tools listed at the very bottom of the page:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Not sure about Ken, but for me, there is no effect. Nothing fine as
reported.

I've been looking at this issue for quite sometime, but still no fix.
If your system is okay, the best way to go is simply backup all the
data then reinstall everything. I've tried on an XP where repair
install doesn't even work, and need a complete reinstall ...so, good
luck on that.

Bosco.

You sir are a freak'n genius. I can't tell you how long
I've spent on this problem this time and twice before on
similar problems. No one at Microsoft and no one at Dell
had a clue. I could tell it was related to winsock, but
you, sir, nailed it. Thank you. I love you man.
