when i open click on run and type msconfig i receive the
following message;
cannot find the file 'msconfig' (or one of its compnents)
make sure path and filename are correct and that all
required libraries are available.
any ideas why this is happening?

Yes. This is happening because MSConfig is not included with Windows
2000. You can acquire and install an XP version, but there are many
better alternatives for controlling start-ups. I prefer this one:
