I am using XP and I want to use regedit; however, when I go to backup my
registry before messing with it, I keep getting a message that says "Cannot
export c:\050905.reg [my registry backup filename]: error writing file.
There may be a disk or file system error."

How do I fix the error?

Thanks.

If you are indeed attempting to backup the registry by doing an
Export (to a REG file), then you are not going to get a usable backup
nor will you be able to "restore all" from it in the future.
Exporting is useful for (most) keys but not entire hives. Use
another method for Full Registry Backups. ntbackup, ERD option...
for example or ERUNT perhaps.

Saving files to the root of a volume is not a wise prceedure on a
regular basis.

Worth repeating: Exporting is not a suitable method of backing up
the registry. Period.
