Hi,

Since few days, I noticed that when logging off and trying to login again, I
cannot enter the user name in the corresponding window in the login screen
(the window opens but I cannot write in it). The only way out is to retart
the computer. This happend firt with one computer but now appears
(irregularly) with several identical computers (I'am overseeing a network of
32 machines). I, therefore, suspect a problem with a recent Windows Update,
since all machines were updated almost at eth same time the problem has
appeared.
Has anyone seen this problem ? It does *not* affect all machines !

Any help would be appreciated.

Paul.

Try switching login screens from "User Accounts".

Paul,

Can I double check a couple of things with you.

You said that you can't enter a _username_, is that correct?

Are you (or your users) logging in using the WinXp "Welcome" screen, or the
traditional Username+Password dialog box where the user can type a username?

Does the keyboard (and mouse) work as expected otherwise?

Does a reboot cure the problem (temporarily)?

When did you first start seeing it?

Sorry for not having replied to this post before, but I was away. I give you
the information you asked me and a few more things. Thank you for your help.

Yes, this is correct.

The computers are set to show the WinXP Welcome screen (with icons for each
user and a blank space when they can enter their password).

The mouse is moving, but it is impossible to type anything in the blank box
where the password must me typed in... (no black dot appear when typing the
password; if the user enters the CORRECT password without seeing the dots and
then click on the green arrow or hit the "Enter" key to enter th password,
nothing happens)

Yes, this is how we solved the problem until we discovered that by hitting
Ctrl-Alt-Del twice, we could sign in by using the alternate WinNT-like login
screen (where the user must enter not only his/her password but also his/her
username.

It started around November 2006 ...

Now, it seems that the problem is partly cured for mots computers but one...
Interestingly enough, some computers were never affected... (I am
supervising 32 computers all WinXP).
