I'd be grateful for any available help. I have a Dell Dimension 4800 desktop,
Pentium 4. Recently I had to reinstall Windows XP (home edition). I performed an "update" reinstallation to repair slow performance and services malfunctions, not a clean install. I have not been able to reinstall the fax service or the windows shared FAX driver. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the Fax Service from the Add/Remove Windows Components a number of times, but I have not been successful. Although unclear, it appears the fax service installation process is interrupted and then terminates without any prompting from me, but it is not clear how or why this happens. Otherwise, the reinstallation of XP appears to have been successful, and my system otherwise appears to be operating properly. The fax service worked properly prior to the reinstallation. Hijack this log appears below - any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you. Start here:
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/FAQFAX.htm#_Toc88835132 2. Why can't the XP Fax Installation Program find the Installation Files? In this case, it appears to have found everything, but didn't install correctly. Its likely you have security data base corruption as documented here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884018/EN-US/ You cannot add a Windows component in Windows XP You can either: 1. Get the hotfix mentioned in the KB article and install it. Microsoft usually waives any charges for support calls to get supported hotfixes listed in Knowledge Base articles. 2. Try this procedure using the Esentutl.exe utility mentioned in the KB article to recover from security database corruption: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...name=c00270202 HP and Compaq Notebook PCs: Unable to Install Windows XP Fax Software I can report that the Esentutl utility has corrected the problem in a number of cases, HOWEVER, note that Microsoft does NOT recommend that you use the utility and would prefer you try the hotfix. Thanks, Hal. I have seen your comments in response to other posts, and I
have looked at the KB article you reference. It is unclear from that article if one is supposed to use the hotfix if one does not get the error messages stated in the article. I do not get any of those error messages. My fax program simply does not install, without any error messages whatsoever. Should I use the hotfix under these circumstances? Thanks again for your time, effort and help. Jeffrey Sternklar "Hal Hostetler [MVP P/I]" wrote: > Start here: > > http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/FAQFAX.htm#_Toc88835132 > 2.
