Cannot enable Administrator in Welcome screen

3 problems that are related (I Think!!)

1. I have followed the procedures to enable the Administrator account listed
in the main Welcome screen to no avail.

I ran the utility from dougknox.com and it did work. I went into the VB
file from somebody else to see what entries it is editing in the Registry,
but my OS does not have that entry...there is no Administrotor entry under
UserList (see below.)

(HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList\Administrator)

2. I noticed that my folders under Documents and Settings have 2 set of
folders for Administrator. I want to get rid f one of them. Which one
should I keep?
- Administrator
- Administrator.Office (Office is the name of this computer in my home
network. These set of files were created at some point when I was messing
around in Safe Mode.)

3. I cannot set the Windows logon screen or Fast switch setting in User
Maintenance screen (in Control Panel.) The system gives me an error
("ClassFactory cannot get the class requested", or something like that.) I
am able to set the check mark in the boxes but it doesn't do anything. If
the system goes into screen saver mode it comes back with the classic logon
window. If I enter the screen again to set the switches they are both
unchecked. I just created another administrator user to see if it was a
problem with the user profile, but it gives me the same error.

Please, help.

Eduardo

If you're editing the Registry manually, you may have to create the Administrator value in the UserList subkey. Right click in a blank area of the right pane and select New, Dword value and name it Administrator.

For the Welcome screen issue, are you using some 3rd party theming program? If so, restore your themes to the Windows defaults, and uninstall the theming program. They are known to cause a number of issues with XP.

Doug,

Thanks, we are getting there.

1. I removed the Gateway desktop theme and the Administrator entry under
User List (in the Register) came up. Oddly, it has the value of 1
(enabled), but it still does not come up. Even stranger, an Administrator
came up in a Windows Welcome screen when I was logged on as a different user
and I tried to switch users, but it asked me for a password and I don't have
any password set for it. I tried to log in in Safe Mode and there is not
password for Administrator. Why would it come up under a different user
when I try to swicth, but not in the initial screen. (I've been moving
around some user folders, and I suspect that some folders may have become
out of synch. I may need to re-create my user profile under a new user with
the folders in their default location.)

2. I have two set of folders for Administrator under Documents and Settings.
How can I figure out which one to eliminate?

3. I still get the error of "ClassFactory cannot supply requested class"
when I try to get into the "Change the way users log on and off". The
switches there are still off.

Eduardo
