i have a problem with IE hanging or freezing. i know it needs repairing but i
have tried to load a brand new disk version and downloaded the latest version
of IE but when i go to install i get error message " set up has detected a
newer version IE and cannot proceed" i can browse using firefox ok but IE
freezes immediatley and i simply cannot update it to repair or reinstall. i
use win XP home.any ideas. maybe i should just stick with firefox??

There are a number of reasons why your IE might hand or freeze, so try the
information here
first and see if it will help:

Verify that Internet Explorer Is Using 128-Bit Encryption
To check:
1. In Internet Explorer, on the Help menu, click About Internet Explorer
2. The level of encryption on your computer appears next to the words Cipher
Strength. Verify that the Cipher Strength value appears as 128-bit
If the Cipher Strength is anything less then 128-bit, download the Internet
Explorer High Encryption Pack to your computer's hard disk, and then install
it.

Delete Temporary Internet Files
There's also a possibility of some corrupted files in your Temporary
Internet Files (TIF) storage. To clear these:
1. In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options, and
select the General tab
2. Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files, and click OK when you
are prompted to confirm the deletion

Configure Internet Explorer Security, Content, and Advanced Settings
Configure Security settings for the Trusted sites zone in Internet Explorer:
1. In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options, and
select the Security tab
2. Select Trusted sites, and then click Default Level
3. Add the secure Web site you are trying to access to the Trusted sites
zone. To do so, click Sites, type the address (URL) of the site in the Add
this Web site to the zone box, click Add, click OK, and then click Apply
Clear the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) slate and AutoComplete history:
1. In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options, and
select the Content tab
2. Under Certificates, click Clear SSL State
3. Click OK when you receive the message that the SSL cache was successfully
cleared
4. Under Personal information, click AutoComplete
5. Under Clear AutoComplete history, click Clear Forms. Click OK when you
are prompted to confirm the operation.
Verify that Internet Explorer is configured to use SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0:
1. In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options, and
select the Advanced tab
2. In the Settings box, under the Security header, click to select the Use
SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0 check boxes (if they are not already selected), and
then click OK

The problem may involve javascript

Go to Start> Run, type in the following commands one at a time and press
enter after each one
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll

If this does not resolve the problem, then register all the following
commands by copying them into the window one at a time the same as you did
the regsvr32 /I urlmon.dll above, hitting enter and then Ok after each one.

Shdocvw.dll
Msjava.dll
Actxprxy.dll
Oleaut32.dll
Mshtml.dll
Browseui.dll
Shell32.dll

If still not joy......

Try refreshing your scripting engine. For 2000 and XP go to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
The install includes a new jscript.dl

If you still need to do a repair.reinstall of IE, then Kelly's site has a
fix which changes the IsInstalled flag value to 0, which will allow the
reintall of IE.

For SP1 -
This enables reinstallation of IE.

Just download and double-click, then proceed to reinstal IE.

For SP2 -
If you have SP2, you will first have to uninstall it. Then run the utility
as descripbed above.

thanx for the info. i will try re the java script ideas. i cannot do ANYTHING
with IE.it is so 'corrupted' that i cannot even access the tools/options
menu without it freezing so i cannot do any of the advise u offer within IE
itself, but i will try all other recommendations. thanx again

If your IE is that corrupted it is very possible that you have malware or a
Trojan on your system that is causing this problem. If you can't access the
Internet from your PC, go to another and download the programs below, burn
them to a CD and then load them on the affected machine and follow the
instructions.
