Hi,

When some of my russian penpals email me (either to my MSN or HOTMAIL
account) then sometimes I get their russian letters ok (which i copy
and paste into google translate to read in english) and sometimes all
their email comes out looking like this gibberish...

! (That's a snippet)

Why do their letters sometimes display like this? (all in one go) And
I can't paste this into google translate, it doesn't know what they
are. So is there any clever way of changing these to Russian? Each
character here must be associated somehow...

Many thanks!

The message is

Добрй день Девид! *ада

or good day David. Pleased..... (we won't ask why she's pleased ;-) )

The problem is that there are different encodings for displaying Cyrillic.
That one is koi8-r.
