cannot detect laptop

's Computer Specifications

tryin to establish ics from desktop to laptop; however, neither laptop nor desktop lan can detect each other ("a network cable is unplugged")

i've tested all hardware and the network cable and everything works

i'm a novice at networking so any suggestions would be helpful

both computers are running xp pro

Are you using a crossover network cable?
