In "Remove Software" some applications won't delete, (Quicken, Google
earth). Attempting to reload say, Quicken subsequently fails. Is there any
other way of clearing these applications so I can start again? (WindowsXP
Home + Service Pack2) no viruses reported on AVG.

I believe both of these apps use InstallShield to install/uninstall.

Hidden files normally at:
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information
---

I would try reinstalling one, or both, to see if this fixes a possible
problem with InstallShield. Then try uninstalling again.

sometimes i have a similar problem with other software. In fact, one
software had me hostage the other day because it required a password to
unistall, but i never provided a password during or after installation...

The way i resolve unistalled regular unwanted software is to

1) make a restore point (just in case)
2) delete their respective program folders via safe mode
3) reboot to, see screens of startup failures that are related to them then
use a registry cleaner to remove the orphaned entries that don't have their
parent folders anymore.....
