Cannot delete "non retrieved" items from Inbox

There are 22 unread items in the Inbox all of which have a line through them,
the message icon has a red cross and another icon has a phone and an arrow
pointing down to an envelope. (Not sure what either of those mean!)

More importantly I cannot delete them or do anything else with them. If I
try to open one the dialog box says "This item has not been retrieved from
the server." and gives me a few options none of which will allow me to delete
these entries.

I assume these are for emails whose header has been downloaded to Outlook
but then deleted from the server and Outlook is now confused. A bit like me!

Please can someone help me get out of this endless, irritating loop and
remove these items from my Inbox

Thanks
Clive

Version of Outlook?
Type of account?
In case of IMAP choose Edit-> Purge Deleted Items

Apologies I did originally put Outlook 2003 in the message but then deleted it!

It is a POP3 account.

Purge Deleted Items is not an option on the Edit menu - well not that I can
see.

Many thanks for the speedy reply

It's a bit cumbersome but this should work;
-Create a new pst-file by using File-> New-> Outlook Data File...
-Set it as your default delivery location by Tools-> Email Accounts-> Next
-Restart Outlook
-You'll now notice that the new folderset holds the Outlook Today folder and
that your original folderset is set secundary below the empty folderset
-You should be able to delete the items now
-Set your original folderset as the default again through Tools-> Email
Accounts-> Next
-Restart Outlook
-You can now disconnect the additional folderset by right clicking the root
of the folderset and choose Close

Robert
Thanks for your perseverance with me! Unfortunately that did not work
(assuming I followed your instructions correctly).

I have created another folder and set it as the mail delivery location,
restarted Outlook and even removed my original folder with the unwanted
items, added it again. It will still not let me delete these items.
Interestingly I do not seem to have an "Outlook Today" folder.

The folders are old ones which have been carried forward from old versions
of Outlook.

I am using a WM5 device with ActiveSync

Don't know if either of these are affecting this or not.

I guess I could create a new PST file and move across everything except
these 21 email headers. That would be a pain and what's to stop the same
thing happening with other email headers in future? Hence would be nice to
know how to solve this.

Thanks again
Clive

The Outlook Today folder is the root folder of your default folderset that
holds the house and clock icon and the Outlook Today page when you select
the folder.

I haven't been able to repro the issue yet but what happens when you select
the folder holding those items and then choose Tools-> Send/Receive->
Process Marked Headers in This Folder

Acutally it did work after all. I realised that Outlook was misbehaving in
other ways so restarted PC, stopped ActiveSync and then tried what you had
suggested again and this time it did work.

Unfortunately one side affect is that it wants to download 292 old emails
again. I assume that because we had changed the folders where email is
delivered (and I haven't really got my head around what that actually means
yet) Outlook had forgotten that it had already downloaded them before and is
doing so again. Still it's easy to remove them.

Thanks again for your help and such a speedy response to my last posting.

Clive
