Cannot delete messages on the server

I have just installed Outlook 2003 and am accessing e-mail on both an IMAP
and a POP3 server. I am attempting to download complete messages to it,
because the servers are slow. To do this I followed the following setup
procedure:

Tools>Send/Receive>Send/Receive Settings>Define Send/Receive Groups
Click on group.
Edit>>Accounts>Folder
Click on folder
Check Download complete item including attachments

and used:

Tools>Send/Receive
Mark to Download Message Copy

This seems to work fine.

I have also checked "Leave a copy of the messages on the server" and "Remove
from server when deleted from 'Deleted Items' "in the Advanced POP3 setup
wizard so that I can access my e-mail from another computer and so that I do
not have a single point of failure.

The problem is that using any of several means of deleting messages, I can
only delete them on the client, not the server. The methods I attempted are:

When viewing the messages in a folder
r-click on message header
Delete
Marks message as deleted on the client by placing a
line through it. The message is still available.
Does not mark message for purging on the server.
Does not place message in "Deleted Items" Folder.

followed by:

Edit>Purge Deleted Messages
Purges Deleted (lined out) messages from IMAP mail's client copy.
Does not affect server copy.
Does not affect "Deleted Items folder."

and dragging-and-dropping messages to the Deleted Items Folder followed by:

r-click on
<any>Folders>><folder>
Empty "Deleted Items" Folder
Deletes item from client only.

or

Tools>Empty "Deleted Items" Folder
immediately purges folder contents from client only.

or

Edit>Purge Deleted Messages
Purges Deleted (lined out) messages from IMAP mail's client copy.
Does not affect server copy.
Does not affect "Deleted Items folder."

The descriptive names of these commands suggest that the server copy would
be purged, but that is not the case. How can I delete the server copy when I
delete the client copy?

Purging should delete the copy in the IMAP account. It won't move messages
ot deleted items, it just deletes the from the server. You do need to do a
send/receive pass for the delete to work.

POP3 accounts don't use purge - but if you delete the item in outlook it
should delete from the server on the next mail pass.
