Outlook 2007 - Can't empty Deleted Items -Messaging Interface Unknown Error - A

Outlook has been giving me fits lately. The most recent manifestation is the
message "The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the
problem persists, restart Outlook". when I try to empty the deleted items
folder. (Naturally, restarting Outlook has no effect, otherwise I wouldn't
be seeking help here.)

Dear Abdul,

are you using Exchange Server or a local PST file?

If you use PST files, did you try to repair your PST file?

Is it an old PST file or a new unicode PST file?
How large is your PST file?

If you click only on one email in the "deleted items" folder and you delete
this one with "shift+del" do you also get this error message?
