Cannot delete file even in safe mode

I have an AVI file on my desktop that I simply cannot delete. Upon trying to
delete it the message reports "Recycling 1 item (763 MB)" but nothing
actually happens (ie. speed is 0 bytes/sec) and I have to cancel this dialog
after a minute or so. I even started my notebook in basic Safe mode (ie no
networking and no nothing) and still couldn't delete it. Two questions - (i)
is there another way to delete it and (ii) why are the conventional methods
failing? Thanks.

Have you tried refreshing the desktop ( right click empty desktop >
Refresh ) ?

Thanks. This did sort the problem out. It was locked by 4 different
processes! I unlocked them and then I was able to delete. That's a very
useful send to shortcut because I get many similar messages under Vista.
